La tragedia americana de George Floyd, the American tragedy of George Floyd

THE AMERICAN DREAM IS DYING WITH GEORGE FLOYD

The brutal murder of George Floyd, a black citizen, at the hands of a white policeman reveals, once more, the progressive deterioration of what has been an exceptional society, aptly characterized as the Great Melting Pot, a society that for almost 200 years has attracted millions of human beings wishing to live in freedom, in democracy and in a just society full of opportunities.

George Floyd is not the only victim, just the most recent one, at the hands of members of an institution that exists to protect citizens, not to abusively judge and execute them.

The murder of George Floyd has revealed, once more, the existence of a deep-seated racial problem in the United States.   In the land of equality, justice is not being applied fairly to citizens of different skin color. We are not saying that there are no acute problems of criminality in the country or that the police should not have the right to defend themselves against attacks. We are saying there is a tragic police bias in the manner they treat black citizens, characterized by the use of excessive force, one that could almost receive the absurd name of “preventive murder”. The murder of George Floyd at the hands of a white sociopath in police uniform is proof of this.

Equally tragic is what has been taking place after George Floyd’s murder. His death has generated a wave of indignation, not only in the U.S. but also in other countries and this indignation is based upon two powerful reasons: one, the death of a person at the hands of the police and the inhuman manner in which it took place, as witnessed by millions across the globe, and, two, the belief, based in previous, similar cases, that the white murderer would not be justly punished.

These two reasons have produced a massive protest against police brutality. What has taken place later is that the just protest has turned violent, threatening the property and safety of citizens who are not responsible for the tragedy. The protest has become politicized and this is also criminal.  As the protest turns violent due to the presence of groups that are trying to convert it into a political demonstration, the ideological opposition calls for repression (“When the looting starts shooting starts”) . As a result the central problem, the murder of George Floyd, is being diffused and transformed in yet another episode of an unhealthy struggle between extremely polarized groups of American society. The central tragedy of a man’s death is lost in the noise made by extremism and in the explosion of sub-human standards.  The death of George Floyd is becoming just one more chapter of the senseless struggle between “progressive” Democrats and “supremacist” Republicans, between those who believe in global warming and those who call it a fraud and so on and on…

The political leadership that could show society the path to reason and to the resolution of these tragedies is not only not working  to do so but is an integral part of the problem, as it fuels dissent and resentment with their silences or their tweets.

The old Greeks used to say that when the Gods wanted to destroy humans, they first drove them mad. We are currently living in the stage of madness that precedes destruction, brought about not by Gods but by mediocre leaders.
